1. Walk me through the beginning of Jaipur Rugs. How has it evolved since starting as a family business?
Jaipur Rugs began over 45 years ago as a humble family enterprise, founded by Nand Kishore Chaudhary from his home in Jaipur with just two looms and a handful of weavers. What started as a mission to connect rural artisans with global markets has grown into a globally recognized social enterprise, working with over 40,000 artisans — 85% of whom are women — across 600 villages in India. Today, while we’ve expanded in scale and reach, our heart remains rooted in preserving the dignity of artisans and nurturing age-old traditions through contemporary design.

2. Jaipur Rugs collaborates with a myriad of designers to develop a collection — how do you go about selecting them? What does the design process look like?
Our collaborations are grounded in a shared respect for craftsmanship and cultural storytelling. We choose designers who are not only creatively aligned but also deeply interested in working with traditional weaving communities. The design process typically begins with a clear conceptual framework, material selection, and pattern development — often led by the designer in close collaboration with our in-house design team. Once the design is finalized, it is translated into detailed graphs for the weavers, ensuring every knot reflects the original vision while honoring the artisan’s hand.

3. How do you incorporate sustainable craftsmanship into your designs, and why is this important to you?
At Jaipur Rugs, sustainability is embedded in every part of the process — from the use of natural fibres and dyes to entirely hand-made production methods that have minimal environmental impact. Beyond materials, we focus on sustaining centuries-old craftsmanship by working closely with artisan communities across India. Each rug carries forward a tradition, a technique, and a human touch — making sustainability both an ecological and cultural commitment.

4. Who do you envision as your ideal customer?
Our ideal customer is someone who appreciates timeless design, values craftsmanship, and connects deeply with the story behind an object. They seek more than just décor — they look for meaning, provenance, and artistry in every piece they bring into their home. For them, a Jaipur Rug isn’t just a floor covering; it’s a collectible — a work of woven art that reflects heritage, culture, and conscious luxur

5. What advice would you give to someone when choosing what rug works well in their space?
Choose a rug not just for how it looks today, but for how it will live with you over time. A well-made rug is an heirloom — it softens with age, gathers stories, and can last generations if cared for. Let it ground your space, both aesthetically and emotionally. Consider texture, tone, and scale — and allow the rug to be a quiet presence of luxury beneath your feet, anchoring the atmosphere without overpowering it.

6. What excites you most about bringing your rugs to the rental market?
We love the idea of making high-quality craftsmanship accessible to those who may be transient in space but rooted in their personal aesthetic. Rentals shouldn’t mean compromising on character. It’s exciting to see our rugs become part of fluid, evolving homes.

7. What can we expect to see from Jaipur Rugs in the future?
The future of Jaipur Rugs lies in the seamless interplay between age-old craftsmanship and contemporary design. We’re continuing to build bridges between the rural and the urban, the traditional and the modern — creating rugs that speak to a global sensibility while staying rooted in the values that define us. You’ll see more collaborations, more innovation in design language, and deeper explorations into how handcrafted luxury can exist meaningfully in today’s world.
